It's been awhile since I've posted anything here. Sorry, but I've been learning a new set of characters.
I've been a fan of Ralph Bakshi since college. And finally I was able to track down a copy of the movie "Wizards". I have three others on order, two of them I knew but the third I had forgotten about. When/if I get them I'm sure I'll do some drawings based on those.
Most of the drawings used in the movie are drop dead gorgeous, notably the ones used in the narration. At the time the movie was released the characters were right on the cutting edge. So I'm presenting my first attempts at drawing some of the characters, including a surprising comparison between Bender and their robot.
During the directors comments Ralph mentioned the original name of the move. It was originally supposed to be "War Wizards" but some guy named George Lucas thought the title was too similar to his little movie. Also Mark Hamill, (you probably know him as Luke Skywalker) did a voice for "Wizards". Ralph also talks about Disney (not in a very nice tone), and why he considers this a "family" movie.
If you're wondering why I put family in quotation marks, well, go and watch the movie and you'll know why…

A Question of Etiquette
But first! (Insert heavy sigh here…) This is a first, not a “good” first. This is the second week in a row that I haven’t been able to offer a full color drawing. My day job is getting worse. Last week I talked about 10-or-12-hour workdays. Now, I’m doing double shifts. Today (Monday) I started at 6am for what turned out to be a 6-hour shift. Later tonight I’m going back to work. Starting at 11pm until 7am! Really! Doing the same overnight thing again tomorrow. Sucks… Two days ago (Saturday 9am) one of my project managers called and asked if I could work. I politely said “No”. I find myself in a Catch-22 situation. If I have money, there’s no time to spend it. If I have time, there is no money. Another tweak is my internal alarm clock. I find myself trying to go to sleep at 2:30 in the afternoon. Usually I’m out around 10-11pm. But this work schedule is brutal. Mutter-mutter-grumble… Some fun stuff now. Been watching “Delicious In Dungeon” on Netflix. At
Day Job
Lots to talk about today. I picked up a book on something called “Kemonomimi”. Lately I’ve been drawing a lot of Anthro critters. This book takes that to a different level. For example, instead of a generic cat-girl, she’ll be based on a specific breed of cat. A Persian cat compared to a Siamese. Looks like fun. Speaking of fun. Let me show some pretty pictures. All taken from the roof of a 24-floor apartment building we’re working on. One looking south-east-ish across the bay, another looking north-east-ish at the Bay Bridge and Treasure Island, and looking west-ish across San Francisco. Occasionally I get to go to places most people can’t. No color drawing this week. I can point the finger of blame directly at my day job. Typically the workdays are very long and very physically tough. When I finally drag myself home, I’m totally blown and can’t do any drawing. Let me give a for example… This sign is over 53’ long. Took six very tedious hours to complete. Plus
Show N Go
I went to a car show over the weekend. Lots of absolutely insane cars to see. So, I wasn't able to complete a colored drawing. I do have one in the works, it’s an AI based thing. Meaning really bizarre. Marge Simpson like she’s probably never been seen before. Oh yeah, back to the show…
Something New, Something Old
Remember the gate I’ve been building? Installed it, I’m done. Finally. The old gate is SO-O-O bad. It’s rotted to the point where it’s merely a sponge held together with a coat of paint. I did this as a favor for my landlord. Making points with the landlord is always a good thing. BTW, he was ecstatic. Very good for me, very good for him. Win, win. A comparison of the two gates. This is pre-install, still some detailly stuff to do but it’s ready to go. The final:

Nice sketches...always nice to try something different. Some people may not recognize it, but it's good to share new knowledge. I had the same problem with Logan's Run.
